Overview
What it does and where it fits.
A temperature switch changes an output when the measured temperature crosses a set point. It is used for alarms, interlocks and simple on-off control, such as tripping a pump on high bearing or oil temperature, or starting a cooling fan. A thermostat does the same job for room or floor temperature, switching a heater, boiler or valve to hold a set temperature.
Pioneer's intelligent temperature switch combines measurement, display and switching in one compact stem-mounted unit. It has two switch outputs, compatible with NPN and PNP inputs, and a 4–20 mA output, so one instrument can give a local reading, two alarm or control points and an analogue signal to the PLC. It runs on 12–30 V DC (24 V recommended) and connects through an M12 x 1 round-pin connector.
The room thermostat is a wall-mounted digital unit for floor heating systems, powered from 95–240 V AC. It switches up to 16 A for electric heating, or 3 A where it controls a water heater, water boiler or gas boiler, and connects over WiFi.

What is the difference between a temperature switch, a thermostat and a temperature transmitter?
A temperature switch changes a contact or transistor output at a set point, for alarms and interlocks on machines and process lines. A thermostat is a switch built to hold a room or floor at a set temperature by cycling a heater, boiler or valve. A transmitter only sends a continuous 4–20 mA signal. Pioneer's intelligent switch does both: two switch outputs and a 4–20 mA output.
Should I wire the temperature switch outputs as NPN or PNP?
Match the input card. PNP (sourcing) outputs switch the positive supply to the load and suit most European-style PLC inputs, which are common in India. NPN (sinking) outputs switch to 0 V and suit sinking-type inputs. Pioneer's switch is compatible with both, so the same instrument fits either system; set the output type during commissioning.
Can the temperature switch drive a contactor or solenoid directly?
Only if the load is within the output rating of 24 V, 1.2 A. A small 24 V DC relay or solenoid is usually fine. Contactor coils on 230 V AC, motors and heaters must be switched through an interposing relay. For safety trips, wire the switch so that a cable break or power loss puts the plant in the safe state.
How should I use the two switch outputs?
A common arrangement is a warning and a trip: the first output raises an alarm as temperature rises towards the limit, and the second stops the pump, compressor or heater at the limit. The two outputs can also run simple two-stage control, for example starting one cooling fan and then a second. Set the points with enough gap to avoid frequent cycling.
Can the WiFi thermostat control a boiler as well as electric floor heating?
Yes, with different ratings. It can switch electric floor heating directly up to 16 A. For a water heater, water boiler or gas boiler, the thermostat switches the heater's control circuit at up to 3 A rather than the heating load itself. For larger electric loads, use a contactor controlled by the thermostat.
